What is a Breast Pump Flange?
A breast pump flange is a crucial component that directly interfaces with your body during pumping sessions. Functioning as a funnel-like structure, it forms a secure seal around the breast and nipple, establishing the necessary vacuum for milk extraction. As the flange draws the nipple into the pump’s tunnel, milk is efficiently extracted.
Selecting the correct size of flange is paramount for both comfort and milk output. A properly fitted flange ensures optimal pumping efficiency while minimizing discomfort during and after pumping sessions. Therefore, accurately measuring your nipple size is essential to enhance both your pumping experience and milk yield.
Two Methods for Measuring Your Nipple Size
First Method: Using a Nipple Ruler or Standard Ruler for Measurement
Step 1: Gently stimulate your nipple to ensure it is erect.
Step 2: Position the ruler at a perpendicular angle to your body, aligning the 0 mark with the base of your nipple while keeping the ruler's edge parallel to your areola.
Step 3: Measure the distance in millimeters between the base and the tip of your nipple to determine the appropriate size.
Gauge the width at your nipple's base
Choose a breast shield size that is appropriately larger than this measurement.
Second Method: Using the Nipple Ruler with Holes for Measurement
Step 1: Gently stimulate your nipple to ensure it becomes erect.
Step 2: Insert your nipple into each hole of the ruler, one by one, to find the hole that provides a comfortable fit. Ensure that your nipple passes completely through the hole, allowing the ruler to touch the areola at the same time.
Step 3: Record the size of the hole that best fits your nipple, completing the measurement process.
Use the nipple ruler with holes to measure:

Note
① Your left and right nipples may have different sizes, so please measure both of them to get their exact sizes.
② When you start pumping, your nipple size may change. Therefore, it's recommended that you choose the flange size 1-3 mm larger than your nipple's size, or you can measure the exact size when you finish pumping.
③ Breasts are highly sensitive. Handle breast measurements with sensitivity and care to prevent discomfort or skin irritation.
